Phobias
Anthophobia (Fear of Flowers)
People often dread flowers due to their underlying meaning and the potential hidden dangers. From the fear of invisible poisonous insects to allergies that may result in anaphylaxis, flowers often trigger a sense of trepidation. Additionally, due to their close ties with funerals, flowers are thought to signify death and impending loss.
We chose Psalm 91:9-10 as it blended in beautifully with flowers and nature. "No harm will overtake you" perfectly embodies the fear of flowers growing and consuming the space around them - the same way a fear can overwhelm us. Additionally, the words "no harm will come near your tent" is an adorable way to depict the safety that comes with being in the presence of God when exploring the beauty of a flower-filled field.
Arachnophobia (fear of spiders)
Why are people afraid of spiders? Researchers are still unsure as to why humans are afraid of spiders. Some believe it is an instinct that is ingrained within us to ensure our safety, while others believe that it is because of cultural upbringing, familial influence, or even a negative experience involving spiders.
Exodus 14:14 has been chosen to represent those with arachnophobia as it is a reminder that when confronted by a spider, it is important to remain calm. For when there is pressure on a spider, they may become provoked to bite. This metaphor can be applied to difficult storms that one may face in life. Do not give in to fear and allow it to overwhelm you. Instead, remain still and allow God to take the lead, for He will help guide you to safety.
Cymophobia (Fear of Ocean Waves)
The feeling of helplessness evoked by powerful ocean waves is the primary reason people tend to fear them. Even strong swimmers can be quickly dragged beneath the waves by the immense force they possess, and the sensation of being engulfed can leave individuals feeling powerless.
As Psalms 89:8-9 so beautifully conveys, even when it seems like the waves are too high for us to handle, God remains our steady anchor in the midst of chaos. He is all-powerful and utterly trustworthy - He alone can quell the turbulent seas. When we feel overwhelmed and helpless, let us trust in His unending faithfulness and take comfort in the fact that He can calm even the mightiest of waves.
Samhainophobia (Fear of Halloween)
Fear of Halloween is often rooted in past experiences. Perhaps, a young individual entered a frightening haunted house or received a fright rather than a treat when knocking on doors. Moreover, death, monsters, and other spooky topics that come along with the celebration might be overwhelming.
Deuteronomy 1:29-30 has been chosen to support those struggling with their phobias on Halloween. The passage reads: "Do not be afraid, Do not be terrified of them," which could be interpreted as God assuring people they don't have to fear the usual Halloween monsters. By remembering this verse, individuals who have these phobias can rest assured that God will be there to protect them as they collect their candy.
